MachineGames, known for creating some of the best first-person shooters in the previous generation, is taking a different approach with their upcoming title, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle. Rather than focusing on gunplay, the developers are positioning it as a secondary option, emphasizing other aspects of gameplay.
According to creative director Axel Torvenius, the primary gameplay direction is to encourage players to use their wits and Indiana Jones’s iconic whip, rather than relying on firearms.
In line with Indiana Jones’s character, the game avoids portraying him as a superhuman fighter who can easily win shootouts against numerous enemies. Torvenius highlights that Indiana Jones is fundamentally a teacher and a somewhat clumsy archaeologist thrust into dangerous situations due to his passion and curiosity.
This characterization informs the game’s design, steering it away from frequent combat scenarios and towards a more thoughtful approach to problem-solving and exploration.
The developers at MachineGames aim to reflect the inherent danger in combat situations within the game. Torvenius emphasizes that engaging in combat should be perilous, as enemies will have alarm systems and reinforcements. This design choice aims to capture the essence of Indiana Jones’s adventures, where conflict is intense and avoidance or clever solutions are often preferable to direct confrontation.
Despite the limited focus on shooting, the game will still feature firearms, but their use is framed differently. Game director Jerk Gustafsson explains that while guns are available, players are encouraged to consider their risks.
For instance, guns can be used as melee weapons, aligning with Indiana Jones’s resourceful and non-lethal approach. This mechanic offers a way to incorporate guns into gameplay while staying true to the character’s traits.
MachineGames is balancing the inclusion of firearms with a gameplay experience that prioritizes intelligence and creativity, in keeping with Indiana Jones’s character. By providing options and emphasizing the danger of combat, they are crafting a game that remains true to the adventurous spirit of the iconic archaeologist while exploring new gameplay dynamics.
