AEW luminary Jon Moxley has shared insights into his journey post-WWE, revealing that Japan was his initial destination after departing from the wrestling giant.
Despite AEW serving as his primary platform, Moxley found solace in NJPW following his WWE exit in 2019.
As the reigning IWGP World Heavyweight Champion, he seamlessly integrated into NJPW, clinching the IWGP United States Championship in his debut match.
Moxley also took rising star Shota Umino under his wing and showcased his prowess in the 2019 G1 Climax tournament. In a recent interview with “Sports Illustrated,” Moxley disclosed that he struck a deal with NJPW before joining AEW.
“That’s accurate. I committed to New Japan before signing with AEW,” Moxley confirmed. “Japan was my initial direction.
New Japan emphasizes in-ring action. While there’s grandeur and larger-than-life personas, the focus remains on top-tier ring performance, which resonated deeply with me.”
Although AEW and NJPW enjoy an amicable relationship today, establishing a partnership wasn’t feasible in AEW’s early days.
However, Moxley opted to maintain a consistent presence in both promotions, hoping to foster harmony between them.
“Initially, AEW and New Japan had strained ties. I remained impartial. It appeared I might have to choose between them, but I refused and committed to both.
Now, the two entities boast a fruitful collaboration. I’d like to think I contributed to nurturing that bond.”
