Speculation often swirls around the potential returns of iconic figures like John Cena, especially as WrestleMania season approaches.
However, according to former WWE writer Vince Russo, there may be significant reasons why Cena should reconsider stepping back into the ring for this year’s WrestleMania.
Russo recently delved into the topic during an episode of Sportskeeda’s Writing with Russo, shedding light on Cena’s past decisions to return to the squared circle.
Despite being a global superstar and having no financial necessity to continue wrestling, Cena’s loyalty to Vince McMahon and the company has often been cited as a driving force behind his return matches.
“John Cena does not need to do this,”
Russo remarked.
“But in the past, loyalty to Vince played a significant role. Cena couldn’t say no when Vince needed him. Now, if guys like Cena still do this, it highlights how difficult it is for many talents to walk away from the business.”
Russo pointed out Cena’s recent matches where he put over rising stars like Austin Theory and Solo Sikoa, illustrating Cena’s willingness to help elevate new talent.
However, concerns arise when these efforts fail to yield meaningful follow-ups, as seen with Theory’s subsequent direction on WWE programming.
Reflecting on Theory’s trajectory post-WrestleMania, Russo expressed disappointment in how the promising star had been utilized. “Cena’s loss to Theory did little to propel him forward.
Putting people over is one thing, but if it doesn’t lead to sustained momentum, it raises questions,” Russo explained.
The veteran writer highlighted the risk wrestlers face when they return to bolster the roster, only to witness the mishandling of the talent they helped elevate.
As for Cena’s future plans, speculation continues to mount regarding his next move in the ever-evolving landscape of professional wrestling.
