Software revenue led the charge, hitting $4.4 billion for the month with a robust 15% growth compared to the same period last year. However, there was a slight downturn in consumer spending on gaming hardware, which experienced a 4% decline year-on-year, accumulating $378 million in total.
The PlayStation 5 from Sony emerged as the top-selling console in terms of both unit and dollar sales for the month, maintaining its stronghold in the market. Following closely behind, the Nintendo Switch secured the second position in hardware unit sales, while the Xbox Series X|S systems ranked second in dollar sales.
Circana’s report also highlighted the impressive performance of the PlayStation 5, noting that its lifetime sales are currently 7% higher than those of its predecessor, the PlayStation 4, at the same stage since launch. It boasts a remarkable 68% increase in sales compared to the PlayStation 3’s lifetime figures.
Accessory spending witnessed a significant uptick, soaring by 45% year-on-year to reach $246 million in January. The PlayStation 5 Dual Sense Edge Wireless Controller Black emerged as the top-selling peripheral for the month in terms of dollar sales.
In terms of game sales, Activision Blizzard’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 dominated as the best-selling title in January, continuing its reign in the gaming landscape.
New releases made notable appearances on the top-selling charts, with Bandai Namco’s Tekken 8 debuting as the second best-selling game, followed by Warner Bros. Games’ latest release, Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, in the third position. Atlus’ latest RPG, Persona 3 Reload, also garnered significant sales, securing the third spot.
Circana also addressed the absence of Pocket Pair’s Palworld sales data in its report, explaining that Palworld publisher Pocket Pair is not a participating publisher in the Digital Licensing Program (DLP), and therefore, digital sales of Palworld are not included in the best-selling title reporting.
