In the upcoming Superman movie, director James Gunn has decided to include Superman’s canine companion, Krypto, adding a heartwarming touch to the narrative. This decision stems from Gunn’s personal experience with his dog, Ozu, whom he adopted shortly after beginning work on the film.
Ozu’s difficult background—coming from a hoarding situation where he lived with 60 other dogs—initially posed significant challenges for Gunn and his family, which ultimately inspired the character of Krypto.
Gunn shared his experiences with Ozu in a heartfelt tweet, recounting how the dog arrived and wreaked havoc in their home, damaging furniture and even chewing up a laptop. Ozu’s struggle to adjust to his new environment and accept affection resonated deeply with Gunn, prompting him to imagine how life would be for Ozu if he had superpowers.
This reflection allowed Krypto to emerge as an integral character in the screenplay, and Gunn noted the timing of Krypto’s introduction coinciding with #AdoptAShelterDog month, highlighting the importance of pet adoption.
Krypto, known as Krypto the Superdog, first made his appearance in the comics in 1955, specifically in Adventure Comics #210.
While he was initially created as a temporary character, he has since become a staple in the Superman comics, recognized for his heightened senses and intelligence that complement Superman’s own powers. Although Krypto had a brief appearance in the live-action series Smallville, this film marks his first official live-action debut, which fans are eagerly anticipating.
The new Superman film is set to focus on a younger version of the iconic character, played by David Corenswet. It will explore Superman’s journey of reconciling his Kryptonian heritage with his upbringing as Clark Kent, a narrative that adds depth to the character.
This film will also serve as the first major project under the new DC Universe (DCU) established by Gunn and producer Peter Safran, titled Chapter One: Gods and Monsters, promising a fresh direction for the franchise.
Scheduled for release on July 11, 2025, the film is generating excitement among fans and film enthusiasts alike. With the inclusion of Krypto and a new perspective on Superman’s origins, the project aims to provide a unique and engaging cinematic experience.
As the release date approaches, fans are encouraged to stay informed about other upcoming films in the superhero genre, ensuring they don’t miss out on this highly anticipated addition to the DC universe.
