The Horizon video game series has expanded beyond its original format with an intriguing new adaptation announced at Summer Games Fest. Guerrilla Games, known for its Horizon series, is partnering with UK developer Studio Gobo to create a Lego-themed game called Lego Horizon Adventures.
This new title is notable for being the first PlayStation-owned intellectual property to appear on a Nintendo platform in over 25 years, marking a significant crossover for the franchise.
Lego Horizon Adventures will feature every asset made out of Lego bricks, aligning with the aesthetic of Lego films and games. Guerrilla Games’ narrative director, James Windeler, noted that many in the studio are avid Lego fans, with some even having rooms dedicated to Lego.
The collaboration with Lego was seen as a natural fit due to the vibrant and optimistic themes of the Horizon series, which translate well into Lego’s playful and creative environment.
The game is designed to be both fun and accessible, aiming at a broader audience than the original Horizon titles. It incorporates elements of humor and silliness, with visual comedy and playful scenarios such as characters dressing up as bananas.
Despite its lighter tone, the game still draws from the Horizon: Zero Dawn narrative, including iconic scenes and references, but it does not strictly follow the storyline of the original game.
Windeler highlighted that Lego Horizon Adventures is intended to appeal to both children and their parents, offering a playful entry point into the Horizon universe. While it is not specifically aimed at younger audiences as a primary goal, the game provides a family-friendly experience that can be enjoyed by players of all ages. The cooperative gameplay is designed to entertain eight-year-olds and long-time fans alike.
The development of Lego Horizon Adventures involves a close collaboration between Guerrilla Games and Studio Gobo, with Guerrilla Games overseeing the narrative and ensuring that the core elements of the Horizon franchise are preserved. The team includes experienced writers and developers, such as Mark Llabres Hill, known for his work on Fable and Sackboy, who brings a humorous touch to the project.
Despite the game’s lighter tone, it maintains a connection to the original Horizon series. While some heavy themes from Horizon: Zero Dawn are handled with care and toned down for a younger audience, the core story elements are present but adapted with humor.
The game remains respectful to the franchise, featuring familiar voices and characters, ensuring that it aligns with the Horizon series while offering a fresh and enjoyable experience.
