Destiny 2 game director Joe Blackburn has revealed his departure from Bungie, which is scheduled for next month and coincides with the final stages of development for The Final Shape. His successor will be Tyson Green, a seasoned Bungie veteran with over two decades of experience.
In a Twitter thread discussing the ongoing development of The Final Shape, Blackburn disclosed that the expansion is approaching the crucial End-to-End playtest milestone. This marks an intense phase of internal playtesting, signaling the transition toward final polishing and bug fixes.
Blackburn conveyed that his tenure with the company will conclude after the upcoming playtest, as he hands over the reins to Tyson Green once they reach the End-to-End stage.
Reflecting on his time with Bungie, Blackburn, a devoted Guardian even before joining the company, expressed gratitude for the privilege of being part of the Destiny 2 team. He emphasized his enduring admiration for Bungie and its teams.
While Blackburn has not yet unveiled his post-Bungie career plans, he mentioned taking a substantial break from social media and continuing to enjoy Destiny as a player. Joining Bungie in 2015 as a raid designer, Blackburn briefly left for Riot Games in 2019 but returned in 2020 to assume the role of game director.
Tyson Green, Blackburn’s successor, has been with Bungie since Myth 2, contributing to various Halo titles before becoming a part of the Destiny team. Blackburn highlighted Green’s significant role in Bungie’s legacy, from Halo PvP to the creation of Exotic weapons in Destiny 1.
The Final Shape is set to launch on February 27, serving as the conclusion to Destiny 2’s Light and Darkness saga. Following this, Bungie plans to reshape the game’s narrative progression, transitioning from the classic seasonal structure to episodes releasing three times a year.
