In a recent interview on the Ring the Belle podcast, former WWE Superstar Cassie Lee, formerly known as Peyton Royce, opened up about a scrapped rivalry with The Bella Twins. The Bella Twins, consisting of Nikki and Brie Bella, were inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame as a tag team in 2021. According to Cassie Lee, a feud between The IIconics, her tag team with Billie Kay, and The Bella Twins was in the works, but unfortunately, it never came to fruition.
Speaking on the podcast, Cassie Lee expressed her excitement about the potential rivalry, stating that it would have been a “dream match” for The IIconics. Unfortunately, the plans were scrapped, and the feud never materialized. Cassie Lee didn’t provide further details about the scrapped feud, but her enthusiasm for the potential match-up was evident.
This revelation comes amidst Cassie Lee’s recent departure from WWE. In April 2021, Cassie Lee and Billie Kay were released by the company, a move that caught Cassie Lee off guard. In an interview on Busted Open Radio shortly after their release, Cassie Lee shared her shock and disappointment at being let go by WWE. She noted that the company’s annual budget cuts had been on hold for some time, and she should have seen the writing on the wall, given that The IIconics had already been split up on the main roster.
The IIconics had a notable run in WWE, capturing the Women’s Tag Team Championships at WrestleMania 35. They held the titles for several months before dropping them to Alexa Bliss and Nikki Cross on an episode of RAW in August 2019. Despite their release, fans continue to hold out hope for Cassie Lee and Billie Kay’s return to WWE television in the future.
