Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, the eagerly anticipated second installment in the trilogy remaking the beloved 1997 classic, is on the brink of release. However, attention is already turning towards the inevitable conclusion of the trilogy, which is steadily progressing.
In an interview with Julien Chieze, director Naoki Hamaguchi shed some light on the transition from Rebirth to the third part. “I can’t divulge our current stage of development, but we’ve made headway with the script and are contemplating various plot developments,” he revealed. (For those interested in the full dialogue, the discussion begins around the 41-minute mark.)
Producer Yoshinori Kitase had previously disclosed the completion of a “tentative first draft” for the third installment, tentatively titled Remnants or Revival. Hamaguchi’s recent comments complement Kitase’s announcement, indicating that script revisions are likely underway as the development process gains momentum.
Reflecting on the transition from Remake to Rebirth, Hamaguchi remarked, “Upon completing Remake’s development, discussions with writer Kazushige Nojima sparked the idea for a sequel, and I believe we find ourselves in a similar situation today.” Given the four-year gap between Remake and Rebirth, fans hope the third entry will arrive with similar promptness.
The conclusion of Final Fantasy 7 Remake left players eagerly anticipating what would come next, as Cloud and his companions gazed towards a promising future with the prospect of an expanded Midgar. Speculating about the third part is more challenging, as the development team has tantalized fans with hints about Rebirth’s potentially heart-wrenching conclusion, as reiterated in the aforementioned interview.
“Those familiar with the original game know that the story takes a significant turn at the City of the Ancients,” Kitase teased a hint of mischief in his smile. “Players eagerly anticipate that pivotal moment… I’d simply encourage them to play and experience it firsthand. Personally, I believe it would serve as a fitting conclusion to the game.”
