In a recent revelation, former WWE Tag Team Champion Jacques Rougeau shared a fascinating anecdote about an unexpected phone call from Vince McMahon, which ultimately led to the creation of his iconic wrestling character, ‘The Mountie.’
Recalling the genesis of ‘The Mountie’ persona during an interview on Sportskeeda’s UnSKripted, Rougeau revealed that it was McMahon himself who pitched the idea to him.
The character, introduced in 1991 upon Rougeau’s return to WWF accompanied by manager Jimmy Hart, portrayed a Royal Canadian Mounted Police Officer armed with a cattle prod and famous for the catchphrase, “always gets his man.”
Rougeau admitted to his initial surprise upon hearing McMahon’s pitch, unsure of how he, a non-policeman, could convincingly embody such a role.
However, despite his reservations, Rougeau’s enthusiasm for the character ultimately prevailed, leading him to fully embrace the persona of ‘The Mountie.’
Reflecting on McMahon’s call, Rougeau recalled the mix of excitement and apprehension he felt.
“Just one given day I got a call from Vince. Vince called me up and he said Jacques, he says I got a, I have a character I would like for you to do. And I said, okay, I was very excited, I said okay. I said what is it, he says, well you are gonna becoming a Mountie, a Royal Canadian Mounted Police. And I said okay… Wow you are talking about a different character. I am not a real policeman, you know it’s like well I am gonna be a Mountie, I don’t even know how to saddle a horse.”
Despite currently being inactive in the ring, Rougeau remains deeply passionate about the wrestling industry, reflecting fondly on his time as ‘The Mountie’ and the unique path it set him on.
