AEW’s recent announcement of multiple talent releases sent shockwaves through social media, drawing comparisons to WWE’s controversial “budget cuts.”
In response to this strategic shift, Eric Bischoff shared his insights on the matter during an episode of “83 Weeks,” highlighting a noticeable change in Tony Khan’s approach to business.
Bischoff recalled Khan’s previous assertion that he would never release any talent, finding the recent move somewhat hypocritical but ultimately acknowledging its shrewdness in hindsight.
“It’s probably a savvy move; perhaps one of the few savvy moves Tony has made recently. The irony is — no disrespect intended — but I haven’t even heard of any of those released talents.”
Despite his critique, Bischoff proceeded to offer some words of wisdom to the released talent, suggesting that Khan may have ultimately done them a favor.
“In the words of my newfound mantra: ‘Comfort is a thief.’ It’s easy to grow complacent, receiving a paycheck every two weeks without any pressure. However, this comfort also robs you of opportunities for growth and progress.”
Bischoff then commended Khan for the success of AEW All In 2023, underscoring it as a significant achievement.
He interpreted the recent talent releases as Khan’s first notable strategic business move in recent times.
“I view it as a positive development. It appears to signal a shift towards fiscal responsibility, prioritizing prudent spending and strategic maneuvering within the industry.”
