WWE superstar Drew McIntyre recently opened up about his evolution as a performer and the changing storytelling within the pro wrestling industry.
In a recent interview with CBS Sports’ Shakiel Mahjouri, McIntyre delved into how his experience on the independent circuit molded him into the wrestler he is today.
Despite being one of the top names on WWE RAW and set to challenge Seth Rollins for the World Heavyweight Title at WrestleMania XL, McIntyre reflected on feeling somewhat restricted during his previous babyface run.
Reflecting on his journey, McIntyre remarked, “I truly found myself and I was truly relaxed during my independent run. Over the last few years, I was a smiling swordsman… There were certain things, a way things have always been done. So I had to stay within those limitations.”
However, McIntyre expressed his enthusiasm for his current heel run, highlighting the freedom it provides for creativity and innovation.
“Right now, it feels like there’s no limitations, there’s no right or wrong answers. There’s everything outside the box… If you’ve got an idea, you go for it, and if it succeeds, it’s on you. If it fails, it’s on you.”
Embracing his darker persona after a series of setbacks, McIntyre’s recent victory at Elimination Chamber: Perth signaled a resurgence in his career. He emphasized the importance of experimentation in pro wrestling, advocating for a more dynamic approach to storytelling within WWE.
McIntyre elaborated on this point, saying,
“Eventually, it’s good to try new things, get a fresh pair of eyes on it… Let’s maybe involve characters in multiple stories at the same time… Everything has meaning, everyone has meaning.”
As he gears up to face Seth Rollins at WrestleMania XL, McIntyre remains focused on maintaining his momentum and reclaiming his position at the top of WWE.
With his eye on the prize, McIntyre’s journey serves as a testament to the ever-evolving nature of professional wrestling and the importance of pushing boundaries in storytelling.
