In a recent video posted by ESPN on X, former UFC double-champ Daniel Cormier shared his dream blueprint for Conor McGregor’s comeback trail after his upcoming bout with Michael Chandler at UFC 303 on June 29. Speaking on behalf of fellow UFC Hall of Famer and co-analyst Chael Sonnen, Cormier laid out his ideas for McGregor’s potential future matchups.
Cormier suggested that if McGregor defeats Chandler, he should be granted a title fight against either Dustin Poirier or Islam Makhachev, ideally scheduled around Mexican Independence Day or shortly thereafter. He emphasized the importance of keeping McGregor active and not letting too much time elapse between fights to maintain his momentum.
However, Cormier also proposed a potential matchup for McGregor in case he loses to Chandler. He recommended pitting McGregor against Tony Ferguson, allowing Ferguson a chance to showcase his skills on a big platform and potentially fulfill his previous promises against McGregor.
Towards the end of the video, Cormier floated another exciting possibility for McGregor’s future: a rematch with Max Holloway. Cormier suggested scheduling the rematch for December, allowing McGregor and Holloway to square off again. He expressed his desire to see the two fighters face each other in their current states, especially given Holloway’s impressive performances in recent years.
Cormier highlighted the tremendous hype and interest that a rematch between McGregor and Holloway would generate, considering their initial bout in 2013 when they were relatively young in their careers. Since then, Holloway has amassed an impressive winning streak, capturing the UFC featherweight title and earning accolades such as the mythical BMF belt.
