CM Punk, currently recovering from a torn triceps, has been making his presence felt backstage at WWE events, including a recent appearance at SmackDown in Birmingham. Punk underwent surgery in the affected area on February 1, 2024, just a day before attending the event. Notably, Punk has also been lending his expertise at the WWE Performance Center in Orlando, actively contributing to the developmental process.
In a recent episode of the Wrestling Perspective Podcast, Punk’s close friend Ace Steel shed light on WWE’s interest in having Punk take on a commentary role. When asked about the possibility of Punk serving as a commentator on WWE TV during his hiatus from in-ring action, Steel affirmed, “Definitely, they want him on commentary.”
However, he expressed some reservations about Punk taking an on-screen role, particularly if he were on the same show as Drew McIntyre. Steel pointed out potential pitfalls, citing Punk’s natural inclination to focus on a potential rivalry with McIntyre.
“I really don’t want to see him on the same show as Drew Mcintyre because his sole focus would be going after Drew Mcintyre. ‘Well, I can’t fight you. Well, I’m gonna try.'”
Steel also acknowledged the injury angle involving Drew McIntyre stomping on Punk’s arm and expressed a preference for Punk’s on-screen role, if any, to be on NXT during his recovery period.
WWE often explores various roles for talent, and the prospect of CM Punk on commentary adds an intriguing dimension to WWE programming. Despite the reservations, Punk’s involvement could inject freshness into the commentary team. However, fans await an official announcement or confirmation from WWE to know whether CM Punk will indeed embrace a commentary role during his recovery phase.
The question posed to the audience is whether they would like to see CM Punk as a commentator for WWE while he is sidelined, raising anticipation for a potential evolution in Punk’s role within the company.
