Soft Ground Wrestling Uganda (SGW Uganda) emerges as a novel independent wrestling venture hailing from none other than Uganda itself.
Their unique approach features a wrestling ring crafted from a soft bed of mud, where performers infuse classic wrestling themes with their own creative twists.
Recently, SGW Uganda garnered attention when former WWE luminaries Mason D. Madden and Mansoor paid a visit to the promotion, filming content and lending support to its participants.
Adding to the spotlight, AEW sensation Kenny Omega took to his Twitch platform to commend SGW Uganda, affirming his admiration for its athletes.
Omega, in his commentary, underscored the palpable dedication emanating from SGW Uganda’s performers.
“One thing that I really love and appreciate about SGW Uganda is, when you’re watching it, you can feel the heart of the athletes,” he remarked. “It’s infectious, to see the passion of these people and to see the passion through their work.”
With a touch of humor, Omega anticipated the inevitable buzz his remarks would generate in wrestling circles.
He then commended the performers for their ability to charm audiences despite potentially lacking formal training or access to top-tier equipment.
Their commitment, evident both in live performances and across social media platforms, impressed Omega.
“It’s quite impressive, actually, that a promotion with such a small start — humble beginning — has been able to attract so much attention around the world,” Omega reflected.
He highlighted the recent visits from Madden, Mansoor, and former AEW talent CIMA as indicators of SGW Uganda’s rising prominence.
“This place — it’s getting traction, and I think that’s wonderful.”
Meanwhile, Omega himself remains in recovery mode following a bout with diverticulitis that sidelined him towards the end of the previous year.
Described as a severe case, Omega’s eventual return hinges on further medical intervention, leaving his comeback timeline uncertain.
