Adam Smith, the lead writer of Baldur’s Gate 3, has firmly moved on from the game, signaling the end of his creative involvement in its future. In an interview with Edge Magazine, Smith expressed his acceptance that once the game was released, its characters and world became the playground of others, whether it be fans on social media or the game’s owners, Hasbro.
He emphasized his curiosity to see what new stories and interpretations would emerge from the community, noting that while he may not appreciate all fan creations, he respects their right to enjoy and build upon the game’s universe.
Despite his emotional attachment to Baldur’s Gate, Smith affirmed that his creative energies are now directed elsewhere. He spoke fondly of the story they crafted for Baldur’s Gate 3, indicating satisfaction with its completion and the freedom from the perpetual cycle of DLCs and sequels.
This closure has allowed him to shift his focus entirely to new projects, including two ambitious RPGs currently in development at Larian Studios, the game’s developer.
Notably, Smith clarified that neither of these upcoming RPGs are Baldur’s Gate 4, nor are they expansions or DLCs for Baldur’s Gate 3. Larian Studios is preparing to hand over the stewardship of Baldur’s Gate 3 to the community with the release of Patch 7 in September, marking a significant transition for the game’s future development.
While Baldur’s Gate 3 remains a significant part of Smith’s past work, he is now fully engaged in new creative endeavors. He remains open to witnessing how others will continue to shape and expand upon the legacy of the game, highlighting a sense of closure and satisfaction in having completed his role in its storytelling journey.
