In a recent interview on the Swerve City Podcast, Adam ‘Edge’ Copeland, the legendary WWE star, opened up about his decision to leave the company he called home for nearly three decades and join All Elite Wrestling (AEW).
The Rated-R Superstar, who parted ways with WWE in September 2022, revealed that his desire for a fresh start and new challenges led him to AEW.
Copeland, who began his wrestling career with WWE in 1996, had been considering his options after his contract expired. Instead of re-signing with the promotion, he chose to take a leap of faith and explore new opportunities.
In October 2022, he made the surprise announcement that he was joining AEW, leaving many fans and pundits wondering what prompted this sudden move.
According to Edge, the allure of working with unfamiliar talent was a major draw for him. With AEW offering a blank slate, he saw an opportunity to create something new and exciting.
“It’s a blank slate right now, and that was the massively exciting part for me coming over to AEW…like 98% of the people over there I’ve never worked [with]. That’s super exciting. That’s challenging. That’s a blank canvas,” he explained.
This desire for novelty is understandable, given Edge’s long history with WWE. Having spent nearly three decades with the company, he had already established himself as one of its top stars.
However, he felt that he had reached a creative plateau, and AEW presented him with the chance to break free from familiar patterns and forge new paths.
Edge’s comments are particularly interesting in light of Jim Ross’s recent remarks on the Grilling JR podcast. Ross, a veteran wrestling commentator and former WWE executive, believes that Edge should have received a push sooner in his WWE career.
According to Ross, Edge had the talent and skills to lead the singles division, but was instead relegated to tag team competition for too long.
Now, as the reigning TNT Champion in AEW, Edge is finally getting the opportunity to showcase his skills as a singles competitor.
