The precise number of players diving into the realms of Baldur’s Gate 3 across PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC remains elusive, yet thanks to insights shared by Michael Douse, the director of publishing at Larian Studios, we now have a glimpse into the game’s widespread popularity, boasting a player count exceeding 10 million.
Since its full release in August, Baldur’s Gate 3 has consistently dominated gaming charts, yet its total player base spanning all platforms has remained somewhat shrouded in mystery. However, recent revelations from Douse provide the clearest indication to date of the game’s massive reach, with confirmation that at least 10 million players have embarked on their adventures in our 2023 Game of the Year.
In a series of tweets addressing a few individuals who have been sending negative messages and threats to Larian Studios amidst preparations for Baldur’s Gate 3 mod support, Douse casually hinted at the game’s exponential growth, stating, “This is a game that went from ~2 million players to way over 10 million in a very short space of time.”
While various metrics offer insights into Baldur’s Gate 3’s success, none provide a complete overview. For instance, Steam’s database reveals a peak concurrent player count of a remarkable 875,000, ranking it among the platform’s top 10 most-played games ever.
It was Steam’s best-selling and most-played game in 2023. However, these figures solely represent the PC platform and exclude PlayStation and Xbox players.
Although the exact number of copies sold remains unknown, it’s highly likely that Baldur’s Gate 3 has surpassed the 10 million mark.
With local multiplayer accommodating two players simultaneously and most instances attributing a single player to a single copy sold, Douse’s assertion of the player count being “way more” than 10 million strongly suggests sales exceeding this milestone. Such a feat is remarkable for a game that was initially perceived as catering to a niche audience.
