“King of Spies,” the secret agent series created by Mark Millar and Matteo Scalera, is returning to print in a special Library Edition from Dark Horse Comics next year. Originally a four-issue series, the story follows Sir Roland King, a retired super-spy reminiscent of James Bond, who learns he has only six months to live.
Burdened by a lifetime of guilt for serving a corrupt system, King embarks on a mission to eliminate a list of targets before his time runs out. The only person capable of stopping him is his estranged son, who has personal grievances against him.
The new Library Edition will be a 152-page hardcover, measuring 8″ x 12.1875″, and will not only include the complete “King of Spies” story but also a collection of bonus content. This additional material will feature never-before-seen artwork, including original pencils and character designs, with further extras to be announced. The deluxe edition aims to offer a more immersive experience for fans of the series.
Aside from Millar’s writing and Scalera’s illustrations, “King of Spies” was brought to life with colors by Giovanna Niro and lettering by Clem Robins.
Millar has expressed his enthusiasm for the project, describing it as a deeply emotional yet action-packed narrative, centered around an old fighter returning for one final mission. Millar’s description highlights the blend of intense violence and emotional depth that defines the series, making it both thrilling and reflective.
“King of Spies” was originally published by Image Comics in 2021. However, earlier this year, Dark Horse Comics acquired the portfolio of Millarworld titles, including “King of Spies,” Huck, The Ambassadors, and the ongoing series Nemesis: Rogue’s Gallery. The acquisition marked a significant expansion of Dark Horse’s catalog of Millar’s works, with “King of Spies” being a notable part of this collection.
The “King of Spies” Library Edition will be available in bookstores on July 14 and in comic shops a day later. This edition offers a chance for both new readers and longtime fans to experience the thrilling story in a new, enriched format.
