The creator of Stardew Valley has unveiled the original name of his wildly successful farming simulation game, which underwent a change due to being “not pleasant to say.”
Stardew Valley’s title is straightforward, derived from the community that serves as the backdrop for our farms, relationships, and unwitting rivals. Eric ‘ConcernedApe’ Barone, sharing insights on the inspiration behind the name on the community’s Discord, mentioned that the name simply came to him. However, in an alternate timeline, the game had a different moniker.
According to Barone, “The game used to be called Sprout Valley,” but he decided to alter it because the term “Sprout” was deemed unpleasant to pronounce.
While “Sprout” is undeniably a delightful word and aptly describes in-game activities like sprouting crops, Barone’s preference prevailed. It seems that the charm of “Stardew-likes” outweighed that of “Sprout-likes.” All in all, the name change turned out to be a wise decision.
The game, formerly identified as Sprout Valley, is now preparing for its significant 1.6 update scheduled for release this year. The update promises to introduce pets donning hats, fortunes and a grand New Year event featuring fireworks. Barone suggests starting a new save file to experience all the additions in the update.
Following this, he will return to working on his next project, Haunted Chocolatier, a life simulation amalgamation featuring ghosts managing a chocolate shop. Quite the intriguing concept!
