According to WWE icon The Undertaker, Gunther, the former longest-reigning Intercontinental Champion, should boost his game and aim for Cody Rhodes’ Undisputed Universal Championship. Despite Gunther losing his Intercontinental belt to Sami Zayn at WrestleMania XL, The Deadman sees this as a signal for Gunther to step up.
“You’re gonna have Gunther, I mean, you know, obviously he lost the Intercontinental belt but that is the sign right there, it’s time to move up a level [and challenge Cody Rhodes]. You know, you had to get that [Intercontinental Championship] off of him so it puts him in a different situation,” he said.
Former WWE personality Matt Camp also supports this idea.
On the Busted Open podcast, he suggested that Gunther’s exceptional endurance, showcased during last year’s Rumble, could set the stage for a compelling showdown with Rhodes.
“The other person and we haven’t seen it yet, I think you can go back to last year at the Rumble. Gunther opens the Rumble, Intercontinental Champion, goes an hour and 10-11 minutes, [and] in the end, he loses to Cody. I think a lot of people expected Cody to win the championship last year at WrestleMania and there’s your setup for Gunther. There’s your SummerSlam match,” he said.
Gunther’s impressive track record speaks for itself, making him a formidable contender. As fans await his next move, it remains to be seen how WWE will script the next chapter for the Imperium leader.
