Opinions on media scrums and press conferences in wrestling vary widely. Some view them as valuable opportunities to glimpse the real personalities behind the spectacle, while others dismiss them as platforms for journalists to generate sensational headlines with provocative questions.
Regardless, one undeniable outcome is the multitude of headlines they generate. While the “Brawl Out” incident has been extensively discussed, recent remarks from Triple H during a post-WrestleMania presser sparked a heated response from Will Ospreay on “AEW Dynamite.”
Tommy Dreamer believes there’s been a rise in performers taking shots at each other, partially fueled by these media events, as he explained on “Busted Open Radio.”
“I’m not sure what purpose they serve,” Dreamer remarked.
“The media event at WrestleMania seemed purposeful. That’s when the shove and all that happened. I thought that was cool, the slap.
But then it returns to media … What positive outcome has come from any media event, apart from shedding light on the negative?”
Supporting Dreamer’s perspective, Bully Ray highlighted the risk of a potential CM Punk-like situation in the scripted world of sports entertainment during press conferences.
Dreamer suggested alternative methods to provide fans and media with insider access beyond press conferences.
“At TNA [Rebellion], four wrestlers were legitimately injured,” Dreamer recalled. “I noticed fans were worried about them. You know why?
Because the locker room was worried about them. I suggested, why don’t we adopt a ‘Real Sports’ approach and provide injury reports for these individuals, because people genuinely care about them.
We posted it on social media, and it worked. But it wasn’t a press conference.”
