Recently, AEW CEO Tony Khan has faced criticism for releasing several AEW/ROH performers from their contracts. Among these, the departure of The Workhorsemen’s Anthony Henry created considerable controversy.
Not only has Henry garnered praise from fans for his performances alongside partner JD Drake, but he has also been sidelined with a broken jaw since March 2024.
During the media call for the ROH Supercard of Honor, Khan was questioned about Henry and the perception that he had previously been reluctant to release talent before their contracts expired.
Khan addressed these concerns by emphasizing the necessity of financial prudence for AEW’s growth, asserting that periodic budget assessments are imperative.
However, Khan revealed a change of heart regarding Henry’s situation.
“After some reflection, I’ve reconsidered,” Khan stated. “Anthony will soon be recuperating, and upon clearance, he’ll return to both AEW and ROH.”
Khan elaborated that arrangements have been made to welcome Henry back into the fold upon his full recovery.
However, he emphasized the uniqueness of each circumstance and reiterated that necessary adjustments are inevitable for AEW’s expansion.
Following his release announcement, Anthony Henry received significant online support, resulting in The Workhorsemen’s t-shirt, featuring an x-ray of Henry’s broken jaw, becoming a top-selling item for AEW.
Henry initially contemplated retirement upon learning of his release but ultimately shifted his focus towards potential opportunities elsewhere.
Henry’s spirits were lifted upon hearing Khan’s remarks during the Supercard of Honor media call, evident in his social media activity.
He shared a GIF of himself and JD Drake with a caption indicating their imminent return, confirming that he was informed about the discussed arrangement prior to the public announcement.
In an official statement, Henry expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support he received and expressed anticipation for his return to action in AEW’s locker room.
JD Drake issued a statement of his own, asserting that both AEW and ROH will face a reckoning in the near future.
