Victoria Derbyshire responded to her colleague’s departure shortly after Mark Urban announced his exit from the BBC after 35 years with the broadcaster.
Newsnight’s Economics Editor Ben Chu announced his departure from the current affairs program after five years. However, he assured that he would continue working within the BBC.
“I’ll be joining the BBC’s Verify unit as Policy & Analysis correspondent in the coming weeks & really look forward to working with their excellent team…”
Ben further stated:
“…I’m, of course, sad to be leaving #Newsnight where I’ve been Economics Editor for most of the past five years and where I’ve worked with superb colleagues – but I will keep a strong relationship with the programme in its new incarnation.”
Victoria was the first to bid her colleague farewell but expressed her happiness about continuing to work together in the future.
She wrote:
“You’re amazing Ben and so happy we can still work together on NN in the future.”
Mark, who announced his BBC exit earlier this week, chimed in:
“Very glad you have been saved for the nation! I’m sure you’ll do brilliantly there.”
Viewers expressed their disappointment following the recent shake-up of Newsnight, with one commenting:
“Awhh no another great journalist leaving Newsnight – good luck Ben hope to see you on our screens again soon.”
Another viewer penned:
“Sorry to see you go from Newsnight. You have been such an excellent addition. All the best with your new role though.”
“So pleased you are staying at the BBC. Such a shame Newsnight is being butchered,” added a third.
