Former WWE head writer Vince Russo delved into his insights regarding Stone Cold Steve Austin’s absence from WrestleMania 40.
Amidst fervent speculation that the Texas Rattlesnake would make a dramatic appearance during the Bloodline Rules match between Cody Rhodes and Roman Reigns, it was instead The Undertaker who made a surprising return, seemingly taking Austin’s place.
During a discussion on Wrestling’s Legion of RAW, Russo suggested that Austin’s absence stemmed from his reluctance to be just another part of the spectacle.
He elaborated, stating,
“There was a reason why the glass didn’t break last night. There was a reason why Austin wasn’t on that show. I knew Steve pretty well and I’m gonna tell you why Austin was not on that show. You know why? He didn’t wanna be one of several.”
Russo emphasized Austin’s protective nature over his character, noting that Austin, more than anyone, guards his persona fiercely.
He inferred that while Austin was likely approached for the event, the prospect of being just another component in the storyline didn’t align with Austin’s vision for his character.
Russo’s analysis underscored Austin’s preference for standalone moments, stating,
“If it’s just him, you got a shot at him doing it.”
The absence of Stone Cold Steve Austin was keenly felt by fans, especially considering the rich history and intense rivalry between Austin and The Rock.
Many had anticipated a potential reunion or confrontation between the two iconic figures.
Teasers of Austin’s appearance had even been hinted at on WWE RAW, particularly during an altercation involving The Rock and Cody Rhodes.
However, with plans evidently shifting, it was The Undertaker who ultimately filled the void left by Austin’s absence.
