Dynamite continues to expand its repertoire of cartoon-based licensed comics with the announcement of Space Ghost as its latest addition, hot on the heels of Thundercats #1.
Penned by David Pepose and illustrated by Jonathan Lau, the revelation of Space Ghost’s inclusion came subtly through an advertisement tucked into the pages of Thundercats #1, later confirmed by Pepose himself with the unveiling of a teaser image for the upcoming series.
While the teaser offers little beyond the creative team and a slated release in May, accompanied by the enigmatic tagline “The Ghost rises,” it stirs anticipation among fans of the iconic character.
Space Ghost, originating in the 1960s as a Hanna-Barbera animated series featuring designs by the renowned artist Alex Toth, garnered a dedicated following despite its brief 20-episode run, thanks to extensive reruns.
The character experienced a resurgence in the late 1990s and early 2000s with the introduction of Cartoon Network’s Space Ghost Coast-to-Coast, a satirical portrayal of the superhero as a sardonic talk show host, spawning numerous comedic spin-offs.
While Space Ghost made sporadic appearances in Gold Key’s Hanna-Barbera comics and had a notable one-shot from Comico in 1987, subsequent publications were scarce until his cameo in Archie’s Cartoon Network comics during his peak popularity fueled by Space Ghost Coast-to-Coast.
DC Comics ventured into the Space Ghost universe with a short-lived title in 2005, and later incorporated the character into Future Quest, a flagship title of its defunct Hanna-Barbera line in the mid-2010s.
The inclusion of Space Ghost was revealed in October 2023 as part of Dynamite’s plan for Warner Bros. cartoon comics, alongside titles such as Powerpuff Girls, Jonny Quest, The Wizard of Oz, and We Bare Bears. Following Thundercats, Space Ghost emerges as the second title to be unveiled from this lineup.
Writer David Pepose, known for his co-creation of the new Punisher, Joe Garrison, and his indie horror hit The Devil That Wears My Face, joins forces with artist Jonathan Lau, renowned for his superhero artwork under an exclusive contract with Dynamite, promising an exciting rendition of Space Ghost’s adventures.
With Space Ghost #1 scheduled for release in May, fans can anticipate further details to emerge in the lead-up to the highly anticipated debut. Stay tuned for more updates as the release date approaches.
