Deep Rock Galactic, a cooperative game featuring rugged dwarves engaged in deep space mining, has cultivated a reputation as one of the most wholesome gaming experiences, despite the occasional friendly fire incidents among players.
Ghost Ship Games, the developer, recently shared their annual review statistics for Deep Rock Galactic, highlighting 2023’s key figures such as total sales, average play hours, and the number of beers ordered in-game. One intriguing statistic is the list of top five causes of player deaths. Leading the chart is fall damage, responsible for nearly 49 million deaths, followed by the glyphid grunt, an enemy type causing close to 24 million player deaths.
However, the third leading cause of death, friendly fire, is a growing concern. It accounts for over 20 million player deaths, which is significantly higher than the deaths caused by other glyphid enemy types ranked fourth and fifth. The developers noted that while other death causes have decreased compared to the previous year, friendly fire incidents have seen a 2.59% increase since 2022.
Friendly fire, while sometimes unavoidable in chaotic co-op gameplay, has become a prominent issue, potentially straining team dynamics. This increase in team kills might be humorously attributed to the 155 million beers consumed by players in-game.
Another notable achievement for Deep Rock Galactic is its sales figure. The game has now surpassed 8 million units sold, with over 2.5 million sold in 2023 alone, marking the game’s best sales year. This success reflects the ever-growing and famously wholesome Deep Rock Galactic community.
