Reflecting on Sting’s journey, we recall his impactful arrival in WWE back in 2015, capturing the attention of the WWE Universe. As we approach the conclusion of The Icon’s legendary career, questions arise about why he left WWE and joined Tony Khan’s AEW.

Sting provided insights into this decision during a 2021 interview, revealing that his intention in joining WWE was not for an in-ring comeback but to have a cinematic match against The Undertaker.
Unfortunately, negotiations fell through, leading to his departure from the promotion. In Sting’s own words:
“It wasn’t a goal of mine to get back in the ring. The only thing I thought I might do is have a cinematic match against Undertaker when I was with WWE. We weren’t able to come to an agreement.”
In a heartfelt statement, the AEW World Tag Champion expressed gratitude for Tony Schiavone’s invitation to join AEW, avoiding the prospect of disappearing from the wrestling scene with regret.
He stated,
“Tony reached out to me and asked if I wanted to come play and let him know. A year later and I thought WWE isn’t working out and I didn’t want to disappear with my tail between my legs. I hate that.”
As Sting prepares for his retirement match tonight, numerous WWE stars, including Cody Rhodes, CM Punk, and Nick Aldis, have paid tribute to The Icon.

Looking back at his WWE debut on November 23, 2014, at the Survivor Series Premium Live Event, Sting played a pivotal role, aiding Team John Cena against Team Authority in a classic Survivor Series clash.
His time in WWE featured a high-profile feud against Triple H, culminating in a singles match at WrestleMania 31, where Sting unfortunately faced defeat.
The Icon’s final WWE match occurred at Night of Champions 2015, where he challenged Seth Rollins for the World title and suffered a loss.
