A YouTuber has impressively transformed a PS5 into the first-ever, albeit unofficial, PS5 tablet, allowing them to play PlayStation games on the move. This new device even outperforms the PlayStation Portal in terms of handheld capabilities.
DIY Perks, the YouTuber in question, deconstructed the PS5 and extracted its essential components to craft this unique handheld system. Given the considerable size reduction from the original console to this custom tablet, they had to inventively modify certain parts to make it functional.
The entire process of creating this handheld PS5, complete with an OLED screen and 4K visuals, can be viewed in a step-by-step video. It’s quite a feat, especially considering the quality of the display.
A critical factor in the creation of this tablet was the PS5’s internal redesign post-launch, which DIY Perks highlights. The revised console version features a significantly smaller motherboard, making it more suitable for integration into a smaller device like a tablet.
Another significant hurdle was adapting the PS5’s cooling system, crucial for its performance, to fit into this portable format. DIY Perks had to replace the original, uniquely shaped main heatsink with a smaller version that maintains similar cooling efficiency.
Overcoming numerous challenges, DIY Perks successfully got the tablet up and running, showcasing games like Astro’s Playroom, Horizon Forbidden West, and Rocket League on a screen comparable to a large iPad. This remarkable transformation offers a surreal experience.
The project leaves us hopeful that Sony might consider developing a similar portable device in the future. For now, you can stay updated on officially upcoming PS5 games through our list.
