Super Mario 64 speedrunner Suigi has solidified his status as a legendary player, achieving an extraordinary world record in the game’s most challenging category. Known for dominating several speedrunning categories in Super Mario 64, Suigi had set remarkable times in the 1-star and 16-star categories, with his 16-star record remaining unchallenged.
He also held the 0-star record and briefly held the 70-star record until another runner surpassed him. However, despite his prowess, he had yet to secure the world record in the intense 120-star category, a highly competitive category requiring over 90 minutes per attempt.
The 120-star category has become increasingly competitive in recent years, especially after the discovery of a new technique that allowed runners to save time with a trick once considered impossible. This discovery led to six world records in a single year, though Suigi wasn’t among the record holders.
Instead, Weegee set the bar with a 1:36:02 time in July 2024, which Suigi couldn’t break. Despite numerous attempts, Suigi struggled to get below 1:37, with even his best runs ending in missteps that kept him just above the elusive time.
However, in a surprising turn, Suigi achieved a groundbreaking 1:35:33 run, smashing Weegee’s record by a remarkable 29 seconds. This time shave was the largest improvement in the 120-star category in nearly a decade, showcasing Suigi’s skill in the latter half of the game, which was nearly flawless.
Unlike typical record-breaking runs, Suigi’s success didn’t come from a game-altering strategy or a new skip but from his precise execution under pressure, elevating his reputation further in the speedrunning community.
The speedrunning community was stunned by Suigi’s performance, with fans and fellow speedrunners expressing admiration. Speedrunning documentarian Summoning Salt praised Suigi’s calmness and control under pressure, describing how Suigi’s consistent world-record pace felt as effortless as a casual warmup.
Viewers on Reddit hailed the run as potentially one of the greatest world records in speedrunning history, with some even predicting that Suigi could be the first to reach a 1:34 time, a feat previously deemed impossible.
With this record, Suigi became the first to hold records in all five major Super Mario 64 categories, an unprecedented accomplishment in a game with such a highly competitive speedrunning scene.
Reflecting on his journey, Suigi expressed gratitude for his persistence, especially following a challenging period in his life. In his record video description, he mentioned that this achievement was a testament to resilience and the rewards of dedication, even through personal setbacks.
