Marvel’s Gang War event has finally reached its climax in Amazing Spider-Man #44, and a new figure has emerged as the reigning power in New York City. However, it’s important to note that this classic Spider-Man adversary, despite assuming control, isn’t quite deserving of the title ‘kingpin’ just yet.
The culmination of this event brings about significant shifts in the Marvel Universe, promising substantial changes for Spider-Man in the future.
Written by Zeb Wells and illustrated by John Romita Jr., with Scott Hanna as the inker, Marcio Menyz as the colorist, and Joe Caramagna as the letterer, Amazing Spider-Man #44 predominantly features a monumental battle between Spider-Man and his allies against the remnants of New York’s criminal underworld, notably Tombstone and the Sinister Syndicate, Silvermane, and Madame Masque along with her father Count Nefaria.
Initially fighting alongside Spider-Man and his allies, the Sinister Syndicate betrays them at the signal of Tombstone, leading to a gripping final confrontation where Spider-Man narrowly escapes with his life.
Utilizing his henchman Shotgun, Tombstone manipulates Silvermane and Count Nefaria through magical sigils, isolating Madame Masque. This strategic move allows Spider-Man to gain the upper hand and ultimately defeat her, bringing the conflict to a definitive end.
With Tombstone emerging as the sole remaining powerhouse, he seizes territorial control over all of New York City, effectively positioning himself as the new ruler of the underworld, albeit not the traditional ‘Kingpin.’
However, the story doesn’t conclude there. Following the aftermath, Peter Parker visited his friend Randy Robertson in the hospital, who sustained critical injuries during the Gang War.
As Randy regains consciousness, Peter informs him of the war’s end and the repeal of the law prohibiting superheroes from operating in New York City. The public demand for change, catalyzed by the devastation wrought by the super-powered gangsters, prompts this significant legislative shift.
The repeal marks a monumental shift for Marvel’s New York City, previously shackled by laws that criminalized all costumed vigilante activity within its borders. While heroes like Spider-Man and Daredevil persisted in their efforts, Mayor Luke Cage found himself constrained, compelled to treat even superheroes as outlaws.
With the legal barrier removed, Spider-Man and his fellow heroes are once again free to operate within NYC without fear of immediate arrest. Nevertheless, Tombstone remains undeterred, vowing to confront Spider-Man and reaffirm his dominance as a formidable villain.
The lingering question from Gang War revolves around the whereabouts of Tombstone’s daughter, Janice, also known as the Beetle. After her failed bid to become the crime boss of Harlem, Tombstone forced her out of the city and out of the conflict. While her exact location remains a mystery, it’s probable that her return is imminent.
As readers eagerly anticipate the next installment, Amazing Spider-Man #45 is set to hit shelves on March 13th, promising further intrigue and action in the ongoing saga.
