“M3GAN,” the successful horror film produced by James Wan’s Atomic Monster and Jason Blum’s Blumhouse, is expanding its universe with a new spinoff titled “SOULM8TE.” This thriller, set to release on January 2, 2026, under Universal Pictures, is a collaborative effort between Wan and Blum, who are producing the project.
Directed by Kate Dolan, known for her work on “You Are Not My Mother,” the film explores a narrative originally written by Rafael Jordan, with a story crafted by Wan, Ingrid Bisu, and Jordan.
“SOULM8TE” follows the journey of a grieving man who turns to an Artificially Intelligent android for comfort after the death of his wife. His attempt to develop a sentient companion inadvertently turns the benign lovebot into a dangerous soulmate, setting off a chain of unexpected events.
Combining elements of a classic 1990s domestic thriller with a modern, technological edge, the film is categorized as an erotic thriller, promising a suspenseful exploration of love, loss, and unforeseen consequences in a high-tech setting.
Kate Dolan expressed her vision for the film as an exploration of relationships and loneliness in today’s tech-driven world, emphasizing timeless human truths despite technological advancements.
The project is positioned within the expanding “M3GAN” universe, following the success of the original film and its sequel, “M3GAN 2.0,” slated for release on June 27, 2025, featuring returning stars Allison Williams and Violet McGraw.
Behind the scenes, Michael Clear and Judson Scott of Atomic Monster, alongside Ingrid Bisu, are serving as executive producers for “SOULM8TE.” Alayna Glasthal oversees the project for Atomic Monster, underscoring the collaborative effort and creative leadership driving the film forward.
With its blend of suspense, seduction, and psychological depth, “SOULM8TE” promises to build upon the chilling atmosphere established in “M3GAN,” catering to audiences seeking compelling narratives that merge horror with intricate human drama.
