Ronda Rousey, the former RAW Women’s Champion, has been making waves in the entertainment industry with her recent announcement of a huge project in the works.
The MMA legend took to Instagram to share a special message she received from Paul Heyman, which sparked a chain of events that led her to write her first screenplay and eventually land a handshake deal with Netflix.
For those who may not know, Rousey’s journey to Hollywood began during her MMA days when she was known for defeating her opponents within seconds in the Bantamweight division.
However, after her first loss to Holly Holm, she struggled to recover and eventually left the sport for good.
She then joined WWE, where she became an instant star in the women’s division. Despite her legit MMA background, she failed to connect with fans and eventually parted ways with the Stamford-based promotion.
Rousey’s Instagram post revealed that it was Paul Heyman who asked her what kind of movie she would like to star in, which prompted her to take a proactive approach to her acting career.
She wrote her first screenplay using her phone’s note app during an 11-hour writing binge, which may have been “god awful” at first, but marked the beginning of her obsession with the craft.
Since then, Rousey has been devouring every book, masterclass, and YouTube video on screenwriting, determined to hone her skills. She even begged her agent, Brad Slater, to get her an internship as a reader for WME, where she worked under the guidance of Adam Novak, the head of the WME story department.
It was during this time that Slater suggested Rousey write her own biopic. She spent eight straight hours working on the first draft of her life story up until her UFC debut and sent it to Slater for feedback. The response was overwhelmingly positive, and soon enough, Netflix came knocking with a handshake deal.
Rousey’s success is a testament to her hard work and dedication. Her journey from MMA to Hollywood is an inspiration to many, and this new project marks an exciting new chapter in her career.
While she may have taken shots at WWE in the past, including a recent comment about Logan Paul getting preferential treatment, it’s clear that Rousey is focused on forging her own path and making a name for herself in the entertainment industry.
