Palworld’s server maintenance is a substantial financial commitment, as stated by Pocketpair CEO Takuro Mizobe. In a recent tweet, Mizobe humorously suggested that the escalating monthly server expenses could potentially lead to the company’s bankruptcy.
Accompanying the tweet was an image depicting the increasing costs of Palworld’s server maintenance, with Mizobe questioning if the company might face financial challenges due to these fees.
Palworld lead network engineer Chujo Hiroto responded in English, emphasizing the commitment to ensuring uninterrupted service. Hiroto mentioned that the servers were prepared without cost considerations, expressing dedication to providing an enjoyable experience for all players.
The image posted by Mizobe indicated a significant monthly increase of 359% in server maintenance costs for Palworld. If the disclosed monthly expense of $478,000 is accurate, the annual cost would amount to nearly $6 million USD. While this figure may fluctuate with player migrations, it underscores the substantial financial investment required for Palworld’s server upkeep.
Despite the staggering costs, it is not entirely surprising given Palworld’s rapid success. Shortly after its launch, the game surpassed titles like Cyberpunk 2077, Hogwarts Legacy, and Elden Ring to achieve the status of the biggest Steam launch in history.
It is approaching PUBG’s record for the highest concurrent player count. Palworld’s popularity has continued to grow, reaching 19 million players within two weeks of its Xbox launch, making it the largest third-party Xbox Game Pass launch to date.
Despite initial server challenges during the massive launch, Palworld’s servers have generally remained stable in the subsequent weeks. This stability is attributed to Pocketpair’s directive to prioritize server stability without concern for the associated expenses.
Looking ahead, Microsoft has pledged support to Pocketpair for establishing dedicated servers in the Xbox version of the game. Currently, players can engage with Palworld on Pocketpair’s official servers, host their own, or join those of friends. Additionally, PC users have the option of creating dedicated servers using Steam’s toolkit.
