Reports from Bloomberg suggest that Overwatch 2’s PvE content, which has faced challenges, is purportedly being shelved.
According to Bloomberg’s recent coverage, the decision to abandon PvE content stems from lackluster sales of previous PvE missions.
Instead of continuing development on PvE, the focus will now shift towards enhancing PvP gameplay.
Additionally, the report sheds light on internal tensions within Blizzard and its parent company, Activision, regarding bonus structures.
While Blizzard traditionally distributed bonuses company-wide to foster innovation and creativity, former Activision CEO Bobby Kotick advocated for rewarding only those contributing to the most profitable projects.
The situation escalated when Overwatch 2 developers were initially informed in August 2023 that they might not receive bonuses due to the sequel’s performance.
Despite assurances of partial compensation, recent developments indicate that Overwatch 2 staff will not receive any bonuses. This marks a departure from Blizzard’s previous practice, where bonuses were tied to company performance rather than individual franchise success.
These changes include making PvP gameplay more engaging and transparent for players, addressing feedback regarding competitive play, and implementing updates to introduce new heroes more seamlessly.
The company’s decision to overhaul bonus structures and focus on refining Overwatch 2’s core PvP experience underscores its commitment to adapting to player feedback and evolving industry trends.
