Filming has officially commenced for Star Trek: Section 31, featuring Michelle Yeoh in the lead role. According to Deadline, the cast includes Omari Hardwick (Power), Kacey Rahl (Hannibal), Sam Richardson (Ted Lasso), Sven Ruygrok (One Piece), Robert Kazinsky (Pacific Rim), Humberly Gonzalez (Ginny & Georgia), and James Hiroyuki Liao (Barry).
The storyline revolves around Emperor Philippa Georgiou (Yeoh), who becomes part of a secretive division within Starfleet responsible for safeguarding the United Federation of Planets and confronting the consequences of her past actions.
Yeoh initially portrayed the character in Star Trek: Discovery Season 1, and subsequently returned as her mirror-verse counterpart, Emperor Georgiou. Section 31 functions as a covert intelligence and defense organization operating on behalf of the United Federation of Planets.
Star Trek: Section 31 was initially announced as a spin-off series over four years ago, but Paramount Plus revealed last year that it would be released as an exclusive feature-length film.
Olatunde Osunsanmi, a producer and director from Star Trek: Discovery, is directing the film based on a script written by Craig Sweeny (Elementary, Star Trek: Discovery). Describing the project as “Mission: Impossible meets Guardians of the Galaxy in space,” Michelle Yeoh shared her excitement about the venture (H/T EW).
Executive producer Alex Kurtzman expressed enthusiasm about the commencement of principal photography, stating, “And we’re off to the races! Thrilled to report principal photography has started on Star Trek: Section 31. We welcome our incredible cast of new characters as they join our beloved Michelle Yeoh on her next wild adventure across the ‘Trek’ universe.”
