WWE enthusiasts can breathe a sigh of relief as Michael Cole, a familiar voice on commentary for almost three decades, assures fans that he plans to stick around for the foreseeable future.
Since joining WWE in 1997, based on Todd Pettengill’s recommendation, Cole has become an integral part of the wrestling promotion’s broadcasting team.
Over the years, he has not only called the action at countless events but has also diversified his role, even embracing a brief heel persona and securing a memorable win at WrestleMania 27.
In a recent interview with Awful Announcing, Cole delved into the mentorship role he has taken on with Corey Graves, shedding light on Graves’ journey within WWE.
With a wealth of experience, Cole emphasized the significance of providing Graves with the opportunity to closely observe, learn, and study the intricacies of commentary during their years working side by side.
“It was a matter of giving him the opportunity to sit side by side for many years, to watch, learn, study, and see how I do things,”
Cole explained.
Expressing contentment with Graves’ growth, Cole envisions a bright future for the 40-year-old commentator, confidently labeling him as the “heir apparent.”
“And at the end of the day, when we gave him the shot? He’s been killing it. I believe he’s the heir apparent,”
Cole affirmed.
Corey Graves, having made a successful transition from in-ring competition to the commentary desk after his retirement in 2014, initially contributed to the NXT commentary team before later relocating to the Raw desk in 2016.
Currently, Graves provides his insights and analysis for SmackDown alongside Wade Barrett.
As Cole takes pride in playing a role in Graves’ professional development and designates him as a worthy successor, WWE fans can look forward to the continued presence of Michael Cole’s seasoned commentary, providing a familiar and authoritative voice for years to come.
