Matt Damon and Casey Affleck Reunite for The Instigators
After their military roles in Oppenheimer, Matt Damon and Casey Affleck are teaming up once again, this time for a thrilling adventure on the streets of Boston. In their latest project, The Instigators, the duo ventures into the realm of heist comedies, portraying two unlikely partners in crime with their sights set on robbing a corrupt politician.
Drawing inspiration from classic films like Midnight Run and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Affleck shared with Entertainment Weekly his desire to explore the dynamics of a buddy action comedy. The Apple TV+ original film promises a fresh take on the heist genre, blending humor with high-stakes action.
In The Instigators, Damon takes on the role of Rory, a father pushed to the edge, who teams up with Cobby, an ex-convict played by Affleck. Their plan to snatch dirty money from a dishonest political figure quickly goes awry, plunging them into a chaotic chase. As they evade the police, corrupt officials, and vengeful mobsters, their situation becomes increasingly dire.
Affleck described the film as a story of two strangers hired for a heist who become frenemies and then friends, all while facing the challenges thrown at them by characters portrayed by Jack Harlow, Paul Walter Hauser, Ving Rhames, and Hong Chau.
Adding to the complexity of their escapade, the duo inadvertently involves Rory’s therapist, played by Hong Chau, in their chaotic escape, injecting humor and depth into their interactions.
Meanwhile, Damon teased the possibility of returning to the Jason Bourne franchise, expressing excitement about potentially collaborating with director Edward Berger on a new installment. Reflecting on the series’ legacy, Damon acknowledged its impact on the action thriller genre while hinting at future developments.
