WWE Hall of Famer Kevin Nash shared his thoughts on the recent warning directed at AEW by the Oklahoma State Athletic Commission (OSAC).
The commission asserted that AEW had breached its prohibition on intergender wrestling by scheduling a match between Nyla Rose, a transgender wrestler, and Alejanda Lion, a cisgender wrestler, on December 23, 2023.
While the commission chose to issue a warning this time, they cautioned that any future transgender versus cisgender matches in the state would face punitive measures.
Nash discussed this development on his “Kliq This” podcast, highlighting it as a rare instance of commission involvement in wrestling and attributing it to political motivations.
Nash remarked, “I think it’s the antiquated commissions that they have,” suggesting that the commission’s actions stem from outdated practices.
He recalled past encounters with commission doctors during his wrestling career, noting that despite increased blood pressure readings, wrestlers were rarely barred from competing due to the understanding that wrestling was scripted.
Nash implied that Oklahoma’s commission, operating under an outdated framework, seeks to politicize wrestling by imposing regulations where none previously existed.
He expressed his belief that the commission’s actions were politically motivated, particularly in the context of Oklahoma’s regulatory world.
The event in question marked AEW’s most recent show in Oklahoma, with no future dates announced as of yet.
Nyla Rose, who joined AEW in 2019 and competes in the women’s division, has made history as the first openly transgender wrestler signed to a major promotion and has since captured the AEW Women’s World Championship.
