Kenny Omega has been noticeably absent from AEW programming since December due to health issues, specifically diverticulitis, which, at one point, posed a serious threat to his life.
According to Dave Meltzer’s latest update in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, it appears increasingly probable that Omega will need surgery to ensure his return to AEW in optimal health.
Meltzer’s report indicates that Omega has experienced fluctuations in his condition over the past few months, enduring discomfort due to the illness.
While past wrestlers like Brock Lesnar and Davey Boy Smith Jr. have dealt with diverticulitis, Omega’s case seems to be more severe.
Recent developments on “AEW Dynamite” suggest that the promotion is eyeing a feud between Omega and Kazuchika Okada upon Omega’s return. The two wrestlers engaged in several high-profile matches in New Japan Pro-Wrestling between 2017 and 2018, with their rivalry currently standing at two wins each.
Okada recently debuted on the AEW roster alongside the Young Bucks, signaling their intent to oust Omega from The Elite and change Okada’s position within the group.
Unbeknownst to him, Omega was already battling diverticulitis at that time. Following a promo segment at the subsequent “Dynamite” taping, Omega’s deteriorating health became apparent, leading to his hospitalization and the realization of the seriousness of his condition.
