WWE Superstar John Cena recently opened up about his promo battle with Austin Theory before their match at WrestleMania 39.
Leading up to last year’s Show of Shows, Theory repeatedly challenged The Cenation Leader for a shot at the United States Championship. Cena finally accepted on the March 6, 2023, episode of Monday Night RAW, but not before verbally dismantling Theory on the mic.
In a recent interview with Chris Van Vliet, Cena explained his approach, stating his belief in Theory’s potential and his desire for Theory to grasp key lessons early in his career.
“I was really straightforward with Austin Theory when we had our verbal exchanges. I see a lot of potential in him, and I want to shake him and say, ‘You’re going to learn all this stuff. I just wish you would learn it today,'” Cena shared.
In the same interview, Cena revealed that WWE had once planned a heel turn for him during his feud with The Rock. He even recorded a new song and acquired new gear in preparation for the storyline.
“It was Cena/Rock One. I got word that they were going to do it. I went out and recorded a new song. I went out and got all new gear. I wasn’t prepared for Ruthless Aggression. That was the last time I wasn’t prepared. I mean, I heard rumblings of we’re going to do it. And in 48 hours, I had a new track, a new studio mix theme song, [and a] final mix. I had seven new singlets, low-cut singlets with boxing-type robes. I already had the boots in storage, so I dusted them off. I was ready to go and already thinking about like what I could do with the story.”
As fans speculate about Cena’s return to WWE and a potential 17th world title win, his future in the wrestling world remains uncertain.
