The upcoming movie adaptation of Minecraft is gaining momentum as Jennifer Coolidge, known for her role in White Lotus, has officially joined the cast. Deadline reported the news, but details about her character remain undisclosed, in line with the secrecy surrounding the storyline. Previous reports suggested the movie would revolve around a destructive “malevolent Ender Dragon.”
Jennifer Coolidge, who received widespread acclaim for her two-season portrayal of Tanya McQuoid in HBO’s 2021 series White Lotus, joins a notable cast that includes Jason Momoa from Game of Thrones, Emma Myers, Danielle Brooks, Sebastian Eugene Hansen, and Jack Black. While specific roles for the cast members have not been revealed, it has been speculated that Jack Black may play the iconic character Steve from the Minecraft universe.
The director of the Minecraft movie is Jared Hess, known for his work on Napoleon Dynamite and Nacho Libre. He took over the project after a version directed by Rob McElhenney did not materialize. Filming reportedly commenced in New Zealand towards the end of 2023.
Last year, Warner Bros. announced a revised release date of April 4, 2025, for the Minecraft movie. Originally scheduled for 2019 under McElhenney’s direction, the film has faced delays. Jared Hess acknowledged the high expectations, stating, “I just can’t disappoint the 10-year-olds, or they’re going to murder us.” Fans eagerly anticipate the project, and as the production moves forward, more details about the cast and storyline are expected to emerge.
