After seven years of anticipation, Chinese tech giant Tencent Holdings has announced the release date for its highly awaited mobile game, “Dungeon and Fighter: Origin”, set to launch on May 21st.
Developed by Korean company Nexon, this action-packed game is a mobile adaptation of the immensely popular “Dungeon and Fighter” computer game, known for its profitability worldwide.
The excitement surrounding the announcement sent Tencent’s shares soaring by approximately 4.5% on Monday morning. Originally released in South Korea in 2022 to widespread acclaim, the game’s launch in China was delayed due to government regulations impacting the gaming industry from 2018 to 2022.
Despite the delay, anticipation has only grown, with investment bank Jefferies predicting “Dungeon and Fighter: Origin” to secure a top spot in revenue rankings in China.
The game is projected to potentially generate annual revenues ranging from $600 million to $1.1 billion over time. However, Jefferies expects a cautious approach to engagement and monetization during the initial launch phase.
Tencent conducted a closed test last month with 300,000 players, yielding promising results. HSBC, in a recent note, highlighted the solid performance metrics observed during testing, including daily active users, retention rate, and user engagement with in-game purchases.
With such positive feedback, the stage is set for “Dungeon and Fighter: Origin” to make a significant impact in the mobile gaming market upon its release.
