Buckle up, because the Super Bowl just dropped the first trailer for “Twisters,” and it’s signaling impending disaster.
Directed by Lee Isaac Chung, acclaimed for the indie gem “Minari,” this film serves as a standalone sequel to the 1996 cult classic, which starred Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton as intrepid storm chasers. In this fresh rendition, “Top Gun: Maverick” alum Glen Powell takes the reins as a self-professed daredevil “tornado wrangler,” alongside “Normal People” breakout Daisy Edgar-Jones, portraying a scientist.
Joining the fray is a star-studded ensemble including Anthony Ramos of “Transformers: Rise of the Beasts,” Sasha Lane, Kiernan Shipka, Katy O’Brian, and the charismatic David Corenswet, known for his role as Superman.
The trailer unveils tantalizing glimpses into the plot of this disaster epic, shrouded in secrecy until now. Notably, our fearless storm chasers confront not one, but two tornadoes, with the phrase “we’ve got twins” hinting at the twist in this latest installment. It appears that the stakes have been raised, reflecting the heightened intensity of storms attributed to the ravages of climate change – a pertinent thematic element.
As anticipated for a teaser of a disaster film, chaos reigns supreme. People are hurled into the air, farms are ravaged, vehicles are obliterated, and debris flies in every direction. Needless to say, anticipation is sky-high – pun unintended, but fitting nonetheless.
Speaking to Vogue in late 2023, Powell clarified that “Twisters” is not a mere reboot but a fresh interpretation. He emphasized, “We’re not attempting to replicate the narrative of the original. It’s an entirely new storyline. There are no returning characters from the original, so it’s not a direct continuation. Rather, it stands on its own as a modern-day narrative.”
Reflecting on the universal theme of humans grappling against the forces of nature, Powell observed, “The concept of humans versus weather is universally resonant – highlighting our vulnerability in the face of these cataclysmic phenomena.”
“Twisters” is scheduled to storm into theaters on July 19, 2024. However, it wasn’t the sole unveiling during the Super Bowl, with trailers for “Wicked,” “Deadpool 3,” and “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” also making their debut appearances.
