According to GSD data, European markets saw a total of 12.14 million video games sold, reflecting a 7.3% decrease compared to the previous year.
The data encompasses both physical and digital game sales from major publishers, excluding Nintendo. Topping the charts was EA Sports FC 24, closely mirroring the January unit sales of FIFA 23 from the previous year.
The standout new release for the month was The Last of Us: Part 2 Remastered, which garnered over two and a half times the sales of its predecessor within the first two weeks of release. This surge can be attributed partly to an upgrade offer for owners of the PS4 version, as well as the expanded PS5 user base since the release of the original game.
Tekken 8 made its debut at No.7, boasting an impressive 80% increase in sales compared to the launch week of Street Fighter 6. This highlights Tekken’s strong following in Europe compared to its rival franchise.
Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice experienced a significant jump in the charts, propelled by a steep discount on Steam, landing at No.8. A sequel to the game is set to be released in May.
Ubisoft’s new Prince of Persia game, The Lost Crown, entered the Top Ten at No.9.
Palworld, while likely to have made an impact, was not included in the data as it covers only digital games from major publishers.
In terms of console hardware, sales in tracked European markets reached nearly 475,000 units in January, marking a slight decline of 1.4% from the previous year. While PS5 sales remained strong, there was a notable decrease in Nintendo Switch sales, possibly due to anticipation for a successor console expected later in the year. Xbox Series S and X sales also experienced a slight dip.
1.8 million peripherals and accessories were sold in January, showing a similar drop of 1.4% compared to the previous year.
The January 2024 Top 10 games list, combining digital and physical sales, showcases the diverse range of titles dominating the European market.
