Evil Empire, the development team behind the acclaimed roguelite Metroidvania game Dead Cells, has announced that they are concluding their work on the title after five years of dedicated updates and expansions.
During their tenure, Dead Cells saw the release of four DLC expansions, along with 18 significant updates. Additionally, the game enjoyed collaborations with other iconic titles such as Castlevania and Hollow Knight. Operating as a subsidiary of the game’s primary developer, Motion Twin, Evil Empire played a crucial role in maintaining and expanding Dead Cells’ universe.
In a recent statement, Evil Empire revealed that they have shifted their focus entirely towards new, undisclosed projects. Expressing gratitude for the opportunity to work on Dead Cells, the team conveyed their appreciation to Motion Twin for entrusting them with the game over the years.
“We are immensely proud of the work we have put into the game,” the statement reads. “We loved every minute and are very thankful to Motion Twin for trusting us and letting us play with their baby for so long.”
The statement further teased the imminent unveiling of these new ventures, promising that the creative minds behind Dead Cells are now fully engaged in these “secret projects.” While specifics remain under wraps, the team assured fans that details would be forthcoming in the near future.
Meanwhile, Motion Twin, the parent company, is forging ahead with its own endeavors. Their latest project, Windblown, was recently announced at The Game Awards. Described as a “lightning-fast combat roguelite,” Windblown is set to debut on Steam’s early access platform later this year.
As for Evil Empire, the statement concludes with a tantalizing hint at the team’s diverse interests, suggesting that they are gearing up to embark on “a new game (or two).” This declaration leaves fans eagerly anticipating what innovative concepts the developers have in store next.
