Former WWE writer Vince Russo has proposed a new role for CM Punk at WrestleMania 40, suggesting that the wrestling icon should step away from the commentary headset and instead serve as the special guest referee.
CM Punk, known as The Second-City Saint, recently made a memorable appearance on Monday Night RAW in his hometown of Chicago.
Engaging in a promo battle with Drew McIntyre and Seth Rollins, Punk found himself at the center of speculation regarding his potential involvement at WrestleMania.
McIntyre hinted that Punk’s closest chance at a ‘Mania moment this year could be joining the commentary team, while Rollins suggested Punk’s injured arm precluded him from serving as a special guest referee for the World Heavyweight Championship match.
However, Vince Russo, speaking on The Brand, emphasized that Punk’s ideal role at WrestleMania should be as the guest referee for the clash between Rollins and McIntyre.
“Is it not right in front of their [WWE] face that Punk needs to be the guest referee, bro? That’s the freaking story!”
Russo exclaimed.
Russo further elaborated that if he were in a position of authority, he would have Adam Pearce, the RAW General Manager, announce Punk as the guest referee, emphasizing the significance of the storyline.
