Chris Pine, known for his role as Steve Trevor in the “Wonder Woman” franchise, has expressed his surprise and disappointment over the cancellation of the third instalment of the Gal Gadot-led superhero series. Pine, who appeared in both “Wonder Woman” (2017) and “Wonder Woman 1984” (2020), shared his reaction during a recent interview with Business Insider.
Stunned by the Decision
Pine revealed that he was “stunned” upon hearing the news that a third “Wonder Woman” movie was no longer happening. He expressed bewilderment over the studio’s choice to cancel a potential billion-dollar franchise and pursue other directions within the DC universe. While acknowledging that the decision was beyond his control, Pine praised the character of Wonder Woman and director Patty Jenkins.
Steve Trevor’s Fate
As for Steve Trevor, Pine made it clear that his character’s journey had reached its end. Steve’s storyline was concluded in the first movie, where he met his demise, and his return in the sequel was a brief one, facilitated by Diana’s wish.
Initial Hesitation and Change of Heart
Pine also reflected on his initial reluctance to take on the role of Steve Trevor, citing concerns about playing a typical romantic interest in a superhero film. However, he changed his mind after discussions with director Patty Jenkins, who presented the film as a unique blend of superhero action and romance, likening it to “Casablanca.”
Cancellation Amid Studio Overhaul
The cancellation of ‘Wonder Woman 3’ was not an isolated event but part of a larger strategic shift within DC Studios. Under the new leadership of James Gunn and Peter Safran, the studio was undergoing a restructuring of the DC Comics Extended Universe, which included the decision to shelve the third instalment.
