Bo Nickal is gearing up for his octagon return at UFC 300 next month, where he’ll face off against Cody Brundage in a highly anticipated matchup.
However, the middleweight prospect isn’t just focused on his upcoming fight – he’s also been embroiled in a heated exchange with Olympic freestyle wrestling gold medalist Jordan Burroughs.
Nickal recently took issue with Burroughs’ commentary during a match involving Penn State Nittany Lions wrestler Carter Starocci at the NCAA wrestling championships. Speaking on the StaleMates Show, Nickal didn’t hold back:
“It’s not his moment so why take a guy’s fourth national title and one of the biggest moments in his career and make it about yourself? To me, it just shows his character. The thing that bothers me is that nobody sees this. He always tries to act like an ambassador of the sport and, ‘Oh, congratulations to Penn State, I’m so proud of you guys and what you’re doing.’ Bro, you’re a freaking fraud.”

Nickal continued to express his frustration:
“You just want to make it about yourself so relax, don’t come at our guys and don’t act friendly to me when I see you. Because I guarantee you he’ll try to see me and be like, ‘What’s up Bo, dap it up’ and be cool. I’m like no, we’re not cool. I don’t really care to be cool with you so it is what it is.”
The tension between the two athletes escalated further when Starocci chimed in, vowing to end Burroughs’ wrestling career at the Olympic trials.
As both Nickal and Starocci hail from Penn State, it’s no surprise that Nickal stood up to defend his fellow alum.
The feud between Nickal and Burroughs initially ignited over Burroughs’ comments about targeting Starocci’s injury during competition.
Nickal publicly criticized Burroughs for his remarks, calling them unprofessional, while Burroughs fired back, suggesting Nickal should stick to his own sport.
Despite a brief exchange on social media, the feud seemed to simmer down. However, Nickal’s recent comments indicate that tensions are still running high between the two wrestlers.
With both athletes facing significant opportunities in April – Nickal in the octagon and Burroughs at the Olympic trials – it remains to be seen if this rivalry will continue to escalate.
