The planned Alan Wake TV series with AMC is no longer moving forward, as confirmed by Remedy Entertainment. Instead, Remedy has partnered with Annapurna to develop and produce adaptations of both Alan Wake and Control for film and television. This change comes after AMC’s rights to Alan Wake expired, allowing Annapurna to take the lead on these projects.
Remedy’s communications director, Thomas Puha, stated that the transition from AMC was amicable and that Annapurna is now focused on expanding Alan Wake and Control into various media formats.
Initially, AMC acquired the rights to develop an Alan Wake series in 2022, with high expectations given AMC’s track record with successful shows like Breaking Bad and The Walking Dead.
However, despite the early involvement of industry figures like Jon Jashni and Jeff Ludwig as executive producers and producers, respectively, there was little progress on the project over the past two years. The expiration of AMC’s rights opened the door for a new direction with Annapurna.
Remedy’s creative director, Sam Lake, expressed excitement about collaborating with Annapurna, noting the opportunity to expand the story of Alan Wake and the broader Remedy Connected Universe beyond video games. Lake emphasized that Remedy retains control over the franchise’s rights and is working closely with Annapurna to unify the vision for these adaptations across multiple mediums, including games, film, and TV.
In addition to the Alan Wake adaptations, Remedy confirmed that Annapurna will also co-finance the development of Control 2. This partnership allows Remedy to maintain executive control and publishing rights over the sequel, which was initially in development with 505 Games. Earlier this year, Remedy acquired full rights to the Control franchise, solidifying their creative authority over the upcoming game.
Overall, while the cancellation of the AMC Alan Wake series may be disappointing to some fans, the new collaboration between Remedy and Annapurna offers exciting potential for the future of both Alan Wake and Control. With the success of Alan Wake 2 and Annapurna’s reputation as a bold production company, this partnership could lead to innovative and engaging adaptations across various entertainment platforms.
